Introduction of Collagen Materials

Collagen is the structural protein of bones, tendons, ligaments and skin. It has a unique tertiary structure, with each polypeptide chain consisting of repeats of a collagen triple helix (Gly-Xaa-Yaa) trimer, where X is usually proline (or any other amino acid) and Y is usually hydroxyproline acid. Collagen has attracted attention due to its excellent biocompatibility, degradability, adhesion, osteoinductive properties, and low immunogenicity. Furthermore, studies demonstrating the key structural and signaling roles of collagen in the extracellular matrix (ECM) make it an attractive biomaterial for tissue engineering. At present, collagen-based biomaterials are widely used in the field of tissue engineering. For example, they can be loaded with biomolecules such as growth factors (GFs) to modulate the host's biological responses, thereby enhancing their regenerative potential.

Services

Collagen fibrils and their networks primarily regulate and define most tissues, and scientific research involving collagen has inspired tissue engineering and design of biomaterials. As a leading service provider of protein engineering, Creative BioMart has established a collagen tissue engineering platform, to develop new biomaterials to mimic complex fibrillar structures as cellular scaffolds to replace native collagen-based ECM.

Collagen is limited in application due to its poor physicochemical and mechanical properties. Our scientists employ the following strategies to modify collagen to enhance its performance.

  • Collagen hydrogels: we synthesize collagen hydrogels using organic materials (chitosan, hyaluronic acid, alginate) and inorganic materials (metals, hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass).
  • Collagen scaffolds: we synthesize collagen-based scaffolds using organic materials (chitosan, polycaprolactone, silk fibroin) and inorganic materials (minerals, metal ions, hydroxyapatite).

Based on the above strategies, we can design unique collagen materials loaded with bioactive substances, such as loaded with growth factors for osteogenesis and vascularization, osteogenic and vascularized drugs, osteogenesis and vascularization cells, osteogenic and antibacterial active drugs. Our engineered collagen complexes for bone regeneration are well received by customers around the world and meet all desired properties including porosity, pore size, biocompatibility, mechanical integrity, structural stability, osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity.
