Protein Engineered Coiled-coil Materials

Introduction of Coiled-coil Biomaterials

A coiled-coil is a supercoiled protein structural motif consisting of two or more α-helical peptides intertwined in a supercoiled fashion. Coiled-coils, one of the most ubiquitous folding motifs in proteins, are not only found in structural proteins but also play important roles in various intracellular regulatory processes as well as membrane fusion. Due to their biological importance and striking appearance, the sequence-structure relationship of helical coils has been extensively studied. Current knowledge gained from systematic studies of the folding and oligomerization of individual amino acids in natural proteins and synthetic peptides has facilitated the de novo design of many different coiled-coil peptides that are widely used in the development of self-assembled, bioactive materials responsive to sequence.

Services

Currently, coiled-coil hybrids and nanocomposites are produced primarily through the engineering of fusion proteins or by combining them with synthetic polymers, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and inorganic nanoparticles, using physical interactions or chemical conjugation.
