Introduction of β-Barrel Protein

Outer membrane proteins are found in Gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria and chloroplasts. They form β barrels, so they are also called β barrel membrane proteins (βMPs). βMPs have a wide range of different functions, they can be non-specific diffusion pores (OmpA, OmpC, OmpF), specific pores (LamB, ScrY), active transporters (FhuA, FepA, BtuB), proteases (OmpT) , Lipase (OmPlA), Acyltransferase (PagP), etc. These βMPs play a key role in nutrient acquisition, protein input/output, and other basic biological processes. βMPs play an important role in bio-nanotechnology and druggability. They are involved in processes such as outer membrane biogenesis, membrane anchoring, pore formation, translocation of virulence factors, and enzyme activity. The existing protein forms have been adjusted through protein evolution to build larger β-barrels.
